Appointment NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme lead announced
Imperial critical care expert Professor Anthony Gordon, from the Department of Surgery & Cancer, has been appointed as Director for the NIHR’s Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme, taking up the position from June 2025
HTA Programme funds evidence synthesis as well as primary research into the clinical and cost-effectiveness, and broader impact of healthcare treatments, tests, and other interventions. The research helps those who plan, provide, or receive care from NHS and social care services.
HTA-funded research can evaluate any intervention used in the NHS for the treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of disease. This is provided the primary outcome of a study is a health-related outcome and has the potential to directly benefit the wider NHS.
Professor Gordon’s research interests focus on precision medicine in sepsis. He has led many clinical trials which have shaped international sepsis guidelines, including as UK chief investigator for the international REMAP-CAP platform trial for COVID-19 and influenza. He has served as programme Director of the NIHR’s National Research Collaboration Programme (NRCP) since 2024.
