New Test Distinguishes Between Viral and Bacterial Infections

A new test has been developed to help quickly diagnose viral infections. It works by detecting a specific antiviral substance in body fluids using a type of molecular scanning. This test can tell the difference between viral and bacterial infections, or between viral infections and immune-related conditions like allergies or autoimmune diseases.

This is scientifically known as an assay, which detects antiviral metabolite 3′-deoxy-3′,4′-didehydro-cytidine from biological fluid samples by molecular spectroscopy.

The test is already available at Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust, and efforts are underway to make it available across the NHS.

Being able to accurately identify viral infections early helps doctors treat patients more effectively. It also reduces the unnecessary use of antibiotics, which can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (often called “superbugs”). Additionally, this information can guide the proper use of treatments for immune-related conditions.
