Treatment Weight loss improves male fertility and supports fairer access to fertility treatment
Obesity is a major and growing public health issue that affects reproductive health. In the UK, couples with obesity are often denied access to NHS-funded IVF treatment due to reduced success rates and increased clinical risk. This creates significant inequality, where affected individuals may face both biological and systemic barriers to having a family. Despite this, there has been limited evidence on whether modifiable interventions, such as weight loss, can directly improve male fertility outcomes.
Our research supported by NIHR Imperial Clinical Research Facility addressed this gap by providing proof-of-concept evidence that weight loss can improve semen quality in men with obesity. Using clinical data, we demonstrated that weight reduction is associated with measurable improvements in key semen parameters, supporting the biological plausibility that male reproductive function can be improved through lifestyle intervention.
The key outcome of this work is the identification of weight loss as a potentially effective and non-invasive strategy to enhance male fertility. This has important implications for both clinical practice and health policy. It suggests that some men and their partners who would otherwise be excluded from fertility treatment pathways may improve their reproductive potential through targeted interventions.
The wider impact of this work lies in its potential to improve equity of access to fertility care. By demonstrating that male fertility is modifiable, this research supports a more proactive and inclusive approach to managing infertility in couples affected by obesity. In the longer term, this could contribute to changes in clinical guidance and reduce the need for more invasive or costly treatments.
